TOWN VIEWS AND PREPARATION FOR THE NEW BRIDGE

Early 1970's

By Andy Gilbert

Rummaging through some old pix, I found these, taken with my trusty Kodak Instamatic 26 (Remember those?). Must have been early to mid 1970's. Southway has been built, but not Northway, and eastbound traffic is still getting snarled up in the High Street and Bridge Street. The 'new' swing bridge is still under construction, as you can see from some of the photos.

The first few views really bring back memories of what it was like in the town before the ring road. Jammed with cars and full of fumes, especially when the old bridge was opened. However, at least it was lively then and had more character than it does now.
