SHEETLOFT WORKERS - 1942

The following pictures show some local ladies hard at work during the war, the Sheetloft warehouse was situated along the West Quay next to the Ark.

The letters "SR" stand for Southern Railway and conveniently the year has also been etched onto the tarpaulin in the top picture.

The foreman at this time was a Mr Harry Sherwin, some of the ladies who carried out this back breaking work were -

Jean Forbes, Meg Harvey, Edna Downey, Mary Clear, Mary Mileham, Edie Todd, Liz Harvey, Mrs Piddleston, Mrs Mainwood and Nat ........?

My mother Maisie Stonehouse is also in all of the photo's, 3rd from left on the top row in the first photo and on the right of the picture in the 2nd, sewing a tear, she is wearing a leather palm to protect her hand as she stitched.  In the 5th picture she is 1st left in the bottom row.
