A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM

Tideway production March 1973
By Sylvia Woolford (Turner)

I helped with makeup during this show. I remember painting Mark Poulton (Puck) a lovely green colour!!!  My husband to be (Reg Woolford) helped with the lighting and electrics.

OMG.... I remember playing an attendant in this play. If my memory serves me correctly, I recall that the play was on for 3 nights. I wore a long dress type costume, and strange Amy Winehouse style eye make up. I remember being vey embarassed throughout the whole ordeal. I would love to see any photos anyone has.

Thanks for the memory

I was one of the producers and I think it was one of the first plays to involve the whole age range of the school. The casts of most productions were drawn from the older pupils but on this occasion even the First Years (as they were then called) took part. They were cast as the fairies who attend Titania and were beautifully choreographed by Mrs Gibson, using the dance techniques that were just being introduced as part of the PE curriculum. Another of the younger pupils who took part was Mark Poulton. He played Puck superbly, an extremely difficult part even for experienced actors, and stole the show every night - including ad-libbing when the lights failed, a feat which brought the house down. I wonder if he ever went on to greater things in the theatre. But the whole cast were marvellous, rising to the challenge of tackling Shakespeare and for carrying off the comedy so well. It's often assumed that serious drama is easier to act but the reverse is true.
