NEWHAVEN FOOTBALL CLUB

Taken in the 1960s

By Brian Urry

Not sure of the exact date (around 60's), my father-in-law John Burgess used to run on the field with his bucket & sponge (the only relief for injured players then!) Whats strange is that he is in 3 photo's, Eastside Rovers, Newhaven Town & Peacehaven. He must have been good or very speedy!

Nice picture Brian, of the old Newhaven football team, thanks for sharing it with us.

As boy I can remember going and watching them on a Saturday, after crawling under the fence !!...

I think this may have been the second eleven of the mid 1950's ?... I have added who I think they are .. perhaps you might be able to correct any errors and fill in the blank spaces...

In the back row from the left next to John Burgess, is John Allery then Billy Parris, "Jumbo" Slater (Goalie) Max Oliver, Don Denyer, -?-

Front Row left to right:- -?-, Derek Downey, -?-, Peter Lewry, Gerald Mally.

For those interested, the body of their strip was red with yellow sleeves and collars.

My father Bill Parris says that this picture is of the Newhaven 1st Team from around 1950-54. He is indeed the player 3rd from the left at the back. The full line-up is as follows : (from left to right)
Back Row - John Burgess, Johnny Allery, Bill Parris, Jumbo Slater, Max Oliver, Terry Denyer and Allan Tapp.
Front Row - Colin Lower, Derek Downey, Henry Wood, Pete Lewery, and Gerald Malley.
The picture cannot be any later than 1955 as Bill did not play after that season, as he had to hang his boots up due to injury.

Does any one know anything about "Newhaven Comrades FC". I have been asked about a photo dated 1927 with them holding a shield. Wearing vertical striped shirts presumably black & white. Stanley Wood is the only name known, probably a youth team as at 16 he looks one of the biggest. Thanks Pete

I can confirm that Max Oliver (my Dad) is standing to the right of the Goalkeeper as you look at it. My Dad passed away on the 18th of August 2009. Such a shame, he'd have loved to have seen all this. I have a few photos of him in his footballing days. Most are of when he played for Whitehawk, but theres a few Newhaven ones. If anybody wants some copies, let me know.
