CARGO / CRUISE SHIPS

Visiting cargo and cruise vessels

By Andy Gilbert

Many of us recall the 'golden days' of the 60's, 70's and 80's, when the East Quay was buzzing with cargo ships and the occasional cruise ship like the Istra and Ilyrria.

But things started back in the 1950's. The caption of the cargo ship St Paul says it all, and I believe the vessels' stern caught at the extreme left of the picture is that of the Tidworth.

The photo of the visiting cruise ship Hammershus dates from the late 1950's or very early 1960's. One of the Dieppe 'screws' is tucked up at the corner of the East Quay and ahead of her is the Brighton (VI).

The colour picture of the same ship taken in 1959 berthed on the East Quay.
