ST LUKE'S LANE - LOWER PLACE - NORTH LANE - OLD SHIPYARD

Then and Now
By Laurie Stonehouse

The area behind Mackays clothing store was completely transformed during the early 1970's.  The area now known as North Lane and Lower Place car park was once home to many people, including my great-grand parents, Liz and George Flowers.

St Luke's Lane included Cairo Cottages, Inkerman Cottages, Providence Place and St Luke's Cottages, with more properties in Lower Place and terraced houses in Essex Place.

My Aunt Kit & Uncle Ray lived in Lower Place in the late 50s.  I would run with my 2 Brothers along the Shipyard from the back of my Nan Graves house in Elphick road to their house.  The Knackers yard was still in the Shipyard and horses were still in there.  Great memories.

Thanks for your lovely comments, Ted. I'm one of the volunteer editors and also joint co-ordinator of this website and its lovely seeing the places where I grew up.

I also have great memories of this area and playing outside near 'Tuckers', pushing my dolls pram from Lower Place to nan and grandad's house. Mum would wait one end of the Shipyard and nan would be at the other end. We all used to play on the swings in the recreation ground also. I think I won 3d from you or John for the highest swing!!!

Do you have any photos that you wish to add to this website?

This is a bit of a long shot, can anyone put some numbers on the doors of the houses in Essex Place. My Great Grandfather John Beal (we have managed to add an "e" on the end of our name from somewhere) lived at 33 Essex Place at the turn of the last century, his brother David lived at no 29 . Not only neighbours they also married sisters from Hastings.

I am going to put this request on the 'message board' part of the site as well to see if anybody can help you with this enquiry. Jackie - Editor

I used to work for Thorn's in the press shop when it was in the abbatoir at Essex Place. The stalls for the animals were still there as were some of the rings in the wall. I loved working there as it was like a small factory on it's own.
