Does anyone remember a shoe-repairer in the High Street in the 50s/60s called Hannigans(Spelling?) I think it was roughly opposite where Dee's is now. It seemed to be a long series of wooden sheds joined together. You had to step down from pavement level to go in. There was a lovely smell of leather inside, and you could see all the belts and wheels that drove the leather-working tools. But, what I remember most was a model of a dog made from woven strips of Woodbine packets that stood on the counter.

My Grandfather  had the shoe repairers  until he retired in late 1960's.  I remember the wooden counter and the dog also the huge clock, the shoes repaired in brown paper  behind the counter. The back sheds full of straps of leather and leather dust. I wonder what happened to the  machines when he retired. Very happy memories  l stayed with my grandparents  many, many times and l just thank goodness  they did not live to see Newhaven destroyed  where my Grandmother  had lived all her life. Just to add her parents lived at Redstart in Brighton Road,  l think the name is still the same  etched in the glass above the front door.
