CARNIVAL QUEEN

1963

By Albert Knights

Jean Knight's, seated on the gondola, was Newhaven's 1st Carnival Queen.  The gondola was made in the side garden of 1, Denton Terrace which is sadly now under the railway flyover.

The gondola was decorated with hundreds of paper roses which were made by Pearl Eager and the ladies of the Newhaven Carnival Society after many hours of hard work.  The float and Queen attended other town carnivals and this photo was taken in the Good's Yard that is now where they unload and grade ballast on the North Quay.
