This fire destroyed the hall, offices and library of the old school and many other blocks also received fire damage.

The children were relocated to other venues throughout Newhaven, until the end of term. My son was in his final year and taking his GCSE exams. His year were relocated to a school in Whitehawk, Brighton. Unfortunately some Whitehawk youths didn't approve of this and the Tideway pupils had to leave quickly.  They returned to study at Newhaven, but it was a very distressing time during their important exams.

These are great pictures Sylvia. I'm doing a master's degree in documentary photography at the moment and am doing a lot of work with mobile phones. Do you have any more of these pictures? Funny, because the first 'news' story I shot with a mobile phone was also of a fire at night, only it was a wooden house in Kaunas, Lithuania.

Just looking at this, how awful. I was their from 1972 to 1976. Actually shocked to see this and no one had told me. I have been living in Ireland since 1994.
