I worked as a Library Assistant at Newhaven Library from 1989 - 1998. These photographs were taken in the old Library (Convent Chapel) Church Hill.

Love these pictures - where did the old library used to be? Is there any of the outside?

The Convent Chapel Library was situated in Churchill. The elderly users thought that it was a very steep climb from the town centre, and the library was eventually re-located to the town centre as part of the Regeneration of Newhaven project. The building is still used by the local community and it is now the Convent Arts Centre.

I remember using the library as a child nearly 50years ago. You had to be quiet. It wasn't too much of a climb for me as we lived in Meeching Rise on the corner of Saxon Rd

Happy memories of the old library on Church Hill in Newhaven. We lived in Northdown Road from 1953 and my mum used to visit the library all the time to get books for us children and herself and my dad. She then continued getting books for herself, dad and the grandchildren and latterly for just herself until the late 1990s when she was wheelchair bound I took over getting her books for her from the relocated site in the town centre (or any other East Sussex libraries I passed!!). She still visited the Newhaven or Seaford library on a Saturday when I took her out. It was one of her favourite pastimes (as you may remember Sylvia and brought her much joy!!)
