This old postcard shows the Hope Inn. In the foreground is the railway track which led to the breakwater. In the photo it still appears to be in working condition, however the last locomotive to use the track in this area was in the summer of 1963.
This fine pub still entices many people down to the west beach area, and as the photograph shows, not much has changed over the years.

Isn’t that the white roof of the ice cream kiosk to the right of the Hope Inn ?
Missing in this photo is the ice cream hut which was on the opposite side of the road to the Hope. Don’t know when the hut was built but I can remember looking forward to a cone on the way home from swimming.
Growing up I had a friend, Michael Cox, whose family lived in the house to the left of the pub, which in itself used to be a pub also I believe. The rooms within were on different levels laid out kind of like a main saloon area and then storerooms. I believe it’s called the Seahouse. His dad used to breed rabbits in the back garden with the sheer cliff face behind them up to the Fort. I would imagine that this photo was taken from on top of the old gun emplacement.
