WRVS heritage project and timespan
‘Ournewhaven’ was invited to attend this enjoyable event held at the Hillcrest Centre, which brought together local adults (who were children during WW2) and young children from Southdown Junior School.
The children asked the adults about their experiences during WW2, especially of being evacuated. Most of the adults remembered it as an exciting time, going away with their friends on a train for the first time. Most remembered their ‘new homes’ as being happy, and they wrote to their parents very often. For a few, it was a very sad time, and the memories were painful.
Timespan gave a very interesting talk about the war years, and demonstrated gas masks, goods and articles of the period.
Eveyone enjoyed a lovely tea of sandwiches and cakes supplied by Joan Rhodes and the ladies of the Hillcrest Restaurant.

Hi, is that the smiling face of Gordon Hills in picture 5? I met him in the Newhaven Social Club a couple of years ago and he told me a picture I was in happened to be on the internet. Thinking he was having a bit of fun with me, I replied ” Yeh, right “. He, having tried to convince me it was true, and me not having a clue about this site, on arrival at home in Somerset I set about looking for it. When I did, I was Absolutely “Gobsmacked” there it all was and soon felt a part of it. I have been “hooked” on it ever since. Long may it remain, and thanks to all those people that give their time and work to keep it going.
