  • Ron Parker was the was an apprentice carpenter and joiner at Bannisters Builders when I started work there in 1961. He would have been pleased that I started as the youngest apprentice had a number of duties to perform. The first job in winter was to light the two coke fires at either end of the workshop. At twenty to ten I had to put the kettle on and take the joiners orders for cakes from Funnells shop over the road, then again at twenty to one it was the kettle again and the trip to Funnells for the lunch time cakes etc. At about 5pm I had to chop up the firewood for Ernie Lipscombe the foreman, it had to be 7 inches long, no longer or it wouldn’t fit into his grub bag.

  • I think I can put three more names to this photo. At the back row R – L looks like my old mate Patrick Franklin, next to him I think is Brian Haywood and on the other end third from the left looks like Alan Farley. I reckon that I should have been on this picture but knowing me, I was probably “sent in”. Anybody know what became of Paddy Franklin, as I would like to know. We lost touch when I moved to Somerset.
