The following picture shows the Hope Inn in her original design. The sea house is to the extreme left of the picture, whilst the next two terraced houses were soon to be consumed by the Hope Inn. This popular public house has had many renovations since the 1950’s. The curious door next to the Hope seems to lead up to the fort, a few of the curved bricks from this entrance still remain, can anyone add further details about this strange doorway from the past.

As a nipper I used to slip under the fence and wander around the old fort with my friends. I remember there being a long rubble-filled tunnel at the end of which would have been the moat. There was a defensive position here where you could look out of the slit ‘windows’ and see the road outside and the harbour entrance. I’m assuming this door would have given access to the area at the bottom of the tunnel.
Have you tried the fort itself? They might have copies of the construction drawings which would explain about the reason for the door.
