AFS units during the war
This month’s picture shows some of the personnel of the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS). These were units of fire fighters auxiliary to the main Fire Service. The AFS were available for use in war damage emergencies in Newhaven and the surrounding district during WW2. In August 1941 the AFS was integrated into the UK Fire Service and was renamed the National Fire Service and thereafter the badges and buttons bore the letters NFS. The unit was able to requisition civilian vehicles for adaption to their own requirements, as can be seen in this photo.

there is a possibility 5th in line after the tender is my Grandad H F Deighton,
He was from Rushden Northamptonshire and moved to Leicester and was posted to Newhaven AFS during the war
