These pictures all relate to the remembrance service held in 1960/61. The first shows the scene at the Transport  Memorial Riverside. Among those recognisable are Alec Devereux, Ray Smith, Doris Betteridge (Standard Bearer for the British Legion’s Women’s Section), Archie Sargeant (behind Doris’s right elbow) and Lt. Cdr. E S P Harrison (Sea Cadet CO). My father Ron Britchfield, who organised Remembrance parades/services for the British Legion for many years, is talking to Vic Hedges, Chairman of the Council.

The other photos were taken at the Town Memorial in Newhaven junction Chapel Street and South Road. The Sea Cadets used to attend Seaford’s wreath-laying and church service in the afternoon and then some of us would go the British Legion’s evening service at Denton. A busy day!

The two other photos at the town memorial show John Owen and Mike Britchfield as sentries. I think Alan Collington is the bugler and Mike Nicholson, with Paul Simmons beyond him, in the front rank of the platoon (seen to better advantage in the large photo). Mrs Hoey is also seen laying her usual Free French cross. The other photo is 1961, after my time, and has John Sweatman* as a sentry and is one of the buglers Geoff Collington?

* This photo and the one in the 1960 cutting of John bearing arms are interesting; he eventually went into the Ministry and later served as a Naval chaplain (just before Alison my wife joined). The phrase “swords (or, in this case, bayonets) into ploughshares” comes to mind!

  • I am building a website to provide a living history of the Newhaven and Seaford Unit, and I would appreciate it if I could have permission to include copies of these photos on it. Thanks Eon
