HMS Newt

By Rob Patten on 09/09/2012 at 18:41

Following on from the recently posted photographs of the BBC visit to HMS Forward at South Heighton, I was wondering if there is any information or pictures regarding HMS Newt? This was a sub-unit controlled by HMS Forward and was the name given to the Coastal Forces based in Newhaven and Seaford who had offices and accomodation in the houses of Fort Road, opposite the old RAF base. I was raised in 42 Fort Road which still had white stripes painted on the brickwork either side of the front door to help see the entrance during the black out. Ammunition and explosives were found in a shed, next door, at No 40 in the 70's and I remember there being a substantial above-ground concrete air raid shelter in the back garden of a house further down the road (Number 58?). Also the pavement was wider than most and I remember being told that a fence ran down the middle of it separating the military side from the civillian side. Does anyone have any memories or pictures that they could post ?
