Our Newhaven

I hope you can help me, we are filming an independent documentary starting in February about Newhaven, we're very interested in learning about the history of boat building in Newhaven and the generations of Newhaven families involved. In particular the story of R LOWER & SON, Shipwrights & Boatbuilders is of great interest to us.

If your members could recommend anyone who would be interested in talking to us about the fishing industry and boat building at Newhaven. Also if there are any local families that are still involved in boat building or fisheries we would love to meet them.

The Newhaven film is part of a series called England Your England (EYE) and is a documentary film project showcasing powerful stories from real people across the UK. The project aims to present stories of what defines us as individuals, communities and a nation. It has become most well known for the inspiring and important stories from normal people, far away from traditional celebrity obsessed media. The series can be seen here: http://www.englandyourengland.tv/

The next film of the series will be about the town of Newhaven, looking at the landscape and the industries of the town, and the people who keep it running.

Why Newhaven?

Newhaven is a good example of a British town with a lot of history, old and new industry and hand working people who have been the cornerstone of the local economy for many years. It as interesting connections with France through the Ferry route, as well as an incredible natural landscape which includes 3 beaches, a cliff range and river mouth.

It is also changing - As the old industries fight to survive and question marks hang over the future of the ferry route, it is a very interesting time to film a portrait of the south cost port town.

Filming

I work in a small crew of one or two people and film in a cinematic style. The aim of the film is to capture the everyday lives of the townspeople, so the filming would be observational and as unobtrusive to your life/work as possible.

Final Film

After the filming has finished I will release the film online on the EYE website as above as well as entering it into Film Festivals. You will be free to have a copy of the film to share with press, media or just friends and family.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions on the addresses below, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks

Dan Graves
