There was, and as far as I know still is a pier to east of the river. I think this may have been made of timber. The only beach on that side would have been Tide Mills, I have very short very poor quality video of the Arromanche leaving Newhaven taken from Tide Mills, a pier is visible in the video in the foreground, taken in 1962 on 8mm.
